About us

Perth is experiencing a homelessness crisis driven by family and domestic violence, sudden life changes, mental health challenges and lack of affordable housing.

More than 9,000 individuals sleep rough, live in their cars and couch-surf, and this number has increased by 40% over the last five years.

Alongside dealing with the root causes of their homelessness, this community suffers disproportionately with other health issues.

To meet the healthcare needs of Perth’s homeless, Homeless Healthcare provides free general practitioner (GP) services to this community including: clinics, drop-in centres, a respite centre, mental health crisis team and a street care program.

Approximately one-third of Homeless Healthcare patients suffer from mental health issues, one-third suffer from pain issues and the remaining third suffer from both. This patient cohort has a low tolerance for the trial-and-error approach traditionally applied to prescribing medications to treat these issues.

United Pathology will perform free-of-charge pathology testing for mental health and pain medications to Homeless Healthcare patients. This enables quick identification of medications and dosages which will have optimal therapeutic value as well as indicate those that may be ineffectual or feature unpleasant side-effects.

United Pathology’s testing regime will result in faster selection and dispensation of appropriate medications and dosages will provide a platform from which homeless individuals are in generally better health and ideally in a better position to leave their situations permanently.
